A type of fat that can raise cholesterol levels.
Saturated fats are found in animal-based foods such as beef, pork, poultry, full-fat dairy products, eggs and tropical oils, such as coconut and palm. They are mostly considered to be less healthy in the diet than unsaturated fat.
Caution: Coconut oil is 92% saturated fat and therefore raises cholesterol levels similar to animal fats (butter, lard). However, it contains a unique type of medium-chain saturated fat called lauric acid that research shows raises HDL or “good” cholesterol levels, which may lower overall heart disease risk.
